Portland Update

It's taken us a few weeks to get adjusted, but we finally have all of the boxes unpacked. We wanted to share some pictures of our new home! The picture above is from our 16th floor balcony looking over the street below. There is a street car running along that street, a Vietnamese Bistro, Subway, and a bank. School officially started this week, and I have classes on Wednesday and Thursday. The first week was exactly what I expected, and I've met some nice new people. I'm learning the basics about OHSU and how to get around "The Hill." I even have a new friend who also just relocated and also uses public transportation, so we can walk to the Tram together. Most of these pictures are from Mom's camera when she and Dad were here visiting. Enjoy! This is one of the neighbor buildings. There are about 7 high rise condo buildings in our neighborhood. Most of them have an Eco Terrace on the 5th floor. Our Eco Terrace has plants which help soak up the rain water and prevent run off into the streets below. The Eco Terrace also has a few gas barbeque grills, lounge chairs, tables to eat outside, and an outdoor fire place. It's been nice to meet some of the neighbors here while grilling out! In this picture, you can almost see there are planter boxes on top of the Eco Terrace as well, and we think one of the neighborhood restaurants has herbs growing up there. Sometimes, we see people in chef's jackets walking around checking out their harvest! This building has pretty teal tiles down the side of it. It's actually a Retirement Community. Many of the residents have dogs that they walk in the park where we also walk Samye! This one is directly in front of our balcony. We face North and look over the Downtown Skyline. You can see there is a freeway to our left, but we don't have too much noise. And, there is an Aerial Tram which runs over the freeway and up to the University. I can walk there easily in the morning, and it's the best way to get to school! This is a west-facing view of the University. It's on Marquam Hill. I heard there are 15,000 people who go "up The Hill" every day, and there are only 2 driving thoroughfares. They offer lots of incentives to bike riders, discount bus passes, and free Tram rides for students, patients, and staff.
The picture above is from our 16th floor balcony looking over Elizabeth Caruthers Park. There are boardwalks at the end of the park closest to our building. The boardwalks are over flowerbeds. It is a city park, and the plants are beautiful.
